Cheeky Ghost Pillow DIY

The year is 2020, and I am suffering. I can't see my friends or go in public without the added worry of a potentially life threatening illness befalling me. So, as any moody, not that put upon but still madly stressed young adult would, I decided it's time for Halloween (It is September).

Of course, my Pinterest homepage is full of Halloween and fall decor. Every time I go to Michael's, I leave with something spooky and 50% off. But, alas, as my stress increases, so does the stress on my bank account. Thus, I decided to make my own decor.

This pillow is so frick frack snick snackin cute, I cannot stand it. Not only is it cute to put around the house, making it was actually very soothing in that I had something to do with my hands while not fully occupying my mind. This DIY does involve some sewing and minor embroidery, so I'd say it's an intermediate level project. I have seen similar pillows online for upwards of $30-$40, but I ended up spending less than $20 in total while still having leftover materials.

I actually first saw a picture of a ghost with butt cheeks on a separate post on Pinterest, but the ghost was not its own pillow. I thought that was the cutest thing ever and decided to figure out how to make a stuffed animal/pillow creature in this shape.

Found on Zazzle

So, what you will first do is fold your felt in half so that once you cut out your ghost, you will have two pieces of felt in this shape. I personally used my iPad as a stencil, with the light shining through, in order to outline my ghost on my felt, but you can also print him out and outline him that way.

Next, you'll embroider his features. I know embroidering sounds complicated and like something a lady of good breeding in the Victorian era would do, but I promise it is not that hard. Since we are trying to make a solid, straight line, I used a "split stitch". To do a split stitch, it is exactly how it sounds. You'll thread your needle and tie a double knot at the end of your thread to anchor it onto your felt. You'll poke your needle through the middle of the thread of your previous stitch to make a continuous line. My ghost friend came out looking less mischevous than the one in the picture, but it's just all in the eyebrows.

Once your ghost friend's features are finished, you'll pin the front and back pieces of your friend together with pins and start sewing around his perimeter. I used a blanket stitch, which is explained here better than I ever could. Do this stitch almost all the way around, leaving a place to stuff your ghost friend. Once you do, just continue the blanket stitch to finish him up! And you have an adorable, cheeky ghost plushy!

Materials:

- A few pins

- A marker or writing utensil

- Scissors

- Cheeky ghost stencil which I have attached

Directions:

  1. Either print or bring up the picture of the cheeky ghost and trace him onto your white felt (folded in half) using your writing utensil so that you end up with two cutouts of your stencil.

  2. Use the scissors to cut out the outline of your ghost.

  3. Flip the pieces around so that the side of the felt with the marker is face side down.

  4. Lightly draw on the features you want on your ghost on the front piece of felt. For me, that was the eyes, eyebrows, smile, and cheeks.

  5. Use a split stitch to embroider the aforementioned features onto this front piece, save for the eyes. We will glue these on later.

  6. Use a blanket stitch (about 1/4 inch apart) to sew up the outside of your ghost, leaving about three inches of room in order to fill him with stuffing.

  7. Insert stuffing, using a capped pen to push the stuffing into the ghosts limbs and little stubby bits.

  8. Finish sewing the outside of the ghost.

  9. Cut small ovals out of the black felt for the eyes and use the fabric glue to glue them onto your ghost's face.

  10. Enjoy your cheeky ghost pillow!
